Very Gerry: Supreme Court Says 'Meh' to Gerrymandering

Updated: Jul 9, 2019

Big news from the US Supreme Court this week as they give a judicial shoulder shrug to partisan gerrymandering across the country. We also sit down with former Standard-Examiner sports writer and current Weber State women's soccer, softball, and volleyball play-by-play announcer Brandon Garside to chat Wildcat sports. Luckily, John wasn't here for it, cause we all know how much he lOvEs SpOrTs.

Very Gerry: Supreme Court Rules Against Deciding Gerrymandering Cases

The Supreme Court dropped a depressing bombshell this week, ruling that gerrymandered maps are not the problem of federal courts. The decision came along partisan lines, with the 5 conservative Justices giving a democracy-killing 'Meh'.

Not really sure what gerrymandering is? Here's a video that explains what it is and why it can be problematic:

We're concerned what this will mean for Proposition 4 in Utah, the ballot initiative that creates an independent commission to redraw congressional and state legislature districts. Below is an article from the Deseret News with more local info:

Action:

Get to know what gerrymandering is and where some gerrymandered districts in Weber county might by by checking out these maps. (Hint: They're mostly in Ogden, which votes for Democrats).

If the state legislature tries to gut Prop 4 next year, as they did Prop 2 (Medical Marijuana) and Prop 3 (Medicaid Expansion), be ready to fight back with facts.

Weber State Sports w/ Brandon Garside

Summer time brings a lull in sports on campus at Weber State, so what better time to chat about what's on tap this Fall semester! We sat down with former Standard-Examiner sports writer and current Weber State women's soccer, softball, and volleyball play-by-play announcer Brandon Garside to chat.

It looks like there may be a JCP trip to Missoula, MT for the big Weber State/Montana football game in November. If you're interested, comment in the Junction City Podcast FB group and let us know.

Action:

Follow Weber State sports on social media and get ready for big football, basketball, volleyball, women's soccer, and softball seasons from the Wildcats this year.
